The art of a thank-you note

Better than email

Better than email

If you remember, I recently made a post about making someones day.

We were about to throw out the envelope the afore mentioned surprise came in and I failed to see the note included from my friend Stephen, a Disney Cast Member.

It’s one sentence. It’s simple. But it’s an extra little WOW that turned an ordinary request into an extraordinary turn of events.

How long did it take him to write it? Probably a few seconds.

But that’s all it took. He could have sent the pin without a note and for most companies, that would be the end of their obligation. But that’s not how they do business.

They create an atmosphere where little WOW’s along the way add up to being more than a big WOW every now and then.

Not everyone can be a Van Gogh, or Rembrandt, or Picasso. Most of the time you’ll recognize these artists’ work.

A simple note to say “Thanks” is sometimes all that’s necessary. Don’t struggle over what to say.

Is the note a piece of art because of the author? Or is it art because we realize just how rare this occurrence actually is?

It doesn’t matter. Write the note.

Dear David, thank you for your unwavering support with helping get the message out. Slow & steady wins the race. Press on…

I love the written thank you note. I keep note cards in my desk drawer. Although the email thank you is better than none, it doesn’t hold a candle to the written note. I do notice that very few people write thank yous except for the expected ones, like wedding gifts, shower gifts, etc. Even in business, most are standard, pre-designed documents that they add your name to. How sad is that? Think I’ll write one myself today.

I have a loyal customer that moved about 100 miles away a couple of years ago. She still calls me about once every two months so I can mail her products to her. The store close to her doesn’t carry 1 of her supplements. She knows she can still depend on me to service her needs.

Every time I get her package ready, I sit down and write her a thank you note. I even chuckle (not a guffaw – more like a chortle) each time as I tell just how much her business is appreciated.

And just for clarification, I did not get a Thesaurus for my birthday. 🙂
