My own dark clouds

Endless cycle

Endless cycle

I didn’t realize just how foretelling my last post would be. I was experiencing my own dark clouds and through a series of unfortunate events, I allowed my brain to take over and went through a period of depression and anxiety.

There are still some dark days and moments, but they are getting fewer and farther between occurrences.

What I have learned during this time is valuable. There are a lot of things outside our control and we have to learn to let them go. It could be toxic foods for a diabetic. It could be toxic friends in our daily relationships. It could be a toxic job that is aging us way faster than normal due to stress. Whatever the reason, the longer we allow the negativity to occupy space in our head is more time and space that is not allowed to focus on things that bring us joy and happiness.

And peace. I hope your day is filled with peace.

Dark clouds on the horizon

Help me with a little experiment.

From where you’re currently standing, can you see the horizon?

If you can, what do you see? If you can’t, what do you see?

Is our view of what is on the horizon preventing us from taking the next step in fulfilling our dreams?

Servant Leadership

Leadership ServantThey are not mutually exclusive terms. On the contrary. They are forever linked.

There is a biblical story in the book of John, chapter 13. The end of Jesus’ life on earth was approaching and he knew it. But his disciples still didn’t quite understand all that was going on and just how soon the crucifixion would take place.

It was just before Passover and Jesus was eating a meal with his disciples. During the meal he got up and proceeded to wash his disciples’ feet. Peter, in his naive way, asked for his head and his hands to be washed. Jesus asked if he really understood what he was doing. He said I’ve washed your feet now you go do the same for someone else. The disciples referred to him as Teacher and Lord yet he was doing the work of a servant.

As you approach your day today, and tomorrow, and the day after that, and so on, be the kind of leader that washes the feet of your followers. The people in your organization won’t care much about you until they know how much you care about them. That’s paraphrased from the original quote. But you get the idea, right?

Be a leader by being a servant.

Foreign language

Where is this source of strength and determination?

Where is this source of strength and determination?

Strength. Determination. Hard work. Believing in yourself.

Some of these may be foreign words. Is there a store where you can buy these? What about a course that’s offered at a local community college?

I believe we learn these traits from watching others and leaning on our family and friends. Do not under estimate the power that comes from being a friend/mentor/source of strength to someone in need.

A worthy report

No holes in their service delivery.

No holes in their service delivery.

Experiences.

We all have them. Some good, some not so good.

Experience is a great teacher. And recently, my family had a good one.

Some people go through their experiences without a second thought. Others look for the hidden agenda, skeptical of the motives of those running the show.

Me? I like to study and watch to see if I can learn why certain companies/businesses do what they do. Without looking up their company history, I make a judgement call about their culture based on my experience. It’s a fair assessment even though no company is immune to service blips from time to time.

Is that really fair you ask? Yep. “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” An internet search attributes this to either Oscar Wilde or Will Rogers. Either way, it’s a great philosophy. If the first impression is worthy of your time/money/loyalty, then there usually is a second/third/infinite visit.
