Open Minded

An open mind is like an open.

An open mind is like an open book that hasn’t been written.

It’s hard to be open when you limit your thinking.

It’s different from having a narrow focus, zoning in on your dreams, goals, passions.

Everybody doesn’t lose with “this cancer built for you.”

Keep your alternatives available. Shout if you need to.

Needles

Needles are needed.

Needles are needed.

A necessary evil.

Until we invent a way to get the medication into the bloodstream in a more efficient manner, needles are necessary.

Even though she’s afraid of them, Karla made a choice to have a subq port. This is a subcutaneous port (tube) that is surgically implanted under the skin and used for the administration of IV meds and fluids.

If Karla really had the choice, I bet she would have chosen not to have cancer. 🙂

Melanoma

It makes everything else hurt.

It makes everything else hurt.

If you didn’t know about melanoma, read the writing below. The text is small in the picture above so I’ve retyped it.

“Melanoma is a type of skin cancer. It is normally an adult disease. In my case, it’s more difficult because I’m only 14. All of the cures are only available to adults, therefore, I have limited options. Melanoma consists of rather small tumors that form as lesions under the skin. To get rid of melanoma you have to go through series of chemotherapy and radiation. The tumors themself don’t hurt but everything else does. There’s really no explanation of what causes melanoma. They think maybe it’s from serious sunburn. The tumors spread throughout your body and become metastatic. If melanoma wasn’t so rare, there would be better information about it. My personal thought about melanoma is that it has changed my and everyone else’s lives. Having cancer dramatically changes your appearance, the way you eat, just your life in general. One day they will declare me cancer free.”

Miracles

Lil Miracles

Li’l Miracles

No. I didn’t skip a letter.

Cassandra calls it “Li’l Miracles”. She writes about how they can be big or small like:

  • finishing chemo
  • getting a call from a friend just to say hi
  • tumors going away without chemo or radiation

Some people call chemo poison. So is cancer. Why would someone want to put poison in their body? Because the poison that already exists is much worse than the possible cure. And the hope for a cure is vastly greater than the despair of any disease.

Somebody you know is out there suffering from a sickness: physical, mental, spiritual. Instead of being the chemo, be the warm soup to calm their stomach. Instead of painful radiation that burns the skin, radiate love and compassion that soothes the heart and soul.

Call them just to say hi. You can be their li’l miracle.

Kemo

Kemo - this girl isn't holding back.

Kemo – this girl isn’t holding back.

Chemotherapy. It’s not peaceful. It’s not relaxing. It can be toxic.

But it can also be an integral part of the healing process.

Let love be the therapy to life’s diseases.
