Leave a trail

Leav a trail.

Leave a trail.

This was a plaque given to me by my sweet friend Vicki Landrum who passed away suddenly last week. Her memorial service was Saturday.

Several people spoke about her character, the fun she brought into their lives and the intellect with which she operated.

Vicki, you will be greatly missed, but the memory of you will live on.

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Dads are special

20130616-075943.jpgBest. Amazing. Proud.

These are words I’ve seen today written about dads everywhere. Happy Fathers Day!

But I also write this post for those who didn’t know their father. Whether your dad wouldn’t, couldn’t or just didn’t. Maybe you can see the importance of being a dad. Maybe your mom had to play both roles.

Maybe you’ll be the role model that dads are patterned after for generations.

What are you trying new today?

100_2874There is no doubt it takes courage to try something new.

Someone, somewhere is going to take the step today and enter unchartered (for them) territory.

Do you dream of what could be?

Go ahead and take a risk. Take a chance. Spread your wings and take flight.

Hi, I’m Dan

His name is Dan

His name is Dan

As a volunteer at the 2013 Chick-fil-a  Leadercast, I was assigned the job of host for a group of hospitality suites.

On the morning of the Leadercast, I was working with Evan (pictured on the right) when he spotted a familiar figure along the concourse. We figured out who it was and the excitement began to build as he made his way toward us.

As he approached, it was obvious he was deep in conversation with the gentleman beside him. However, when he walked in front of us he stopped, offered his hand and said, “Hi. I’m Dan.” It wasn’t Mr. Cathy. It wasn’t President and COO Cathy. It was Dan.

How often do you introduce yourself as president/director/professor? Or are you just you?

Pick a number

Not feeling like giving the full 100.

Not feeling like giving the full 100.

I want you to try an experiment. Get 20 pieces of paper and a hat. Write down percentages on the pieces of paper starting with 5% and finishing with 100% in increments of 5. Place the pieces of paper in the hat, mix them up and draw one.

That is your amount of focus and dedication to the work you have to do today. What did you draw?

I don’t really believe we start our day by proclaiming we’re only going to give 70% (my result).

But that’s what we end up doing if we’re not focused, determined and committed to our goals. It may take a week, a month, or 50 years.

If you can do the math, it takes twice as long to reach your goals if you’re only giving 50%.
